Teenagers
Digital Photograph
Inspired by the film "Heathers" (1988)
This piece explores the complexities of being a teenager in today's society, including many different forms of stereotypes along with the dangers that have been integrated into the teenage world. In order to capture the essence of adolescence, a lunch tray, notebook paper, pens and pencils, and a typical school-style sandwich were used. Elements such as nail polish, jewelry, and a scrunchie were selected to highlight the stereotypical young female while being juxtaposed with items such as bullets, cigarettes, and pills to highlight the danger that is also now a part of the "teenage experience." The negative elements in this piece can be interpreted directly as drug use and committing violent crimes or as the ongoing mental health crisis that is present among our youth. This image conveys a sense of darkness and a strange comfort as many items are commonly seen and utilized regularly, while others are widely viewed as alarming.
Research
My research for this project is in the form of articles rather than photographs, which helped me grasp a better understanding of the characters and the symbolism within the movie.
